one family wasn't enough to cause a negative reaction. Yes, that was my sense of it at the time. Further, as the civil rights movement came about, I sensed that we not quite whites suddenly looked like kin in comparison and that's why the discrimination against us faded away. Some people just need someone to look down on. The lowest group on the totem pole is it. An even lower group pushes everyone else up a notch. Except for blacks, sadly. You're not old enough to remember when people of European descent Americanized their names to pass. They dropped the "-ski" and the "-witz." or picked out a whole new name. You can see the absence of such if you watch the credits in old movies.
