This is because the college kids know religion is make believe! So let's continue the comparison with religious dogma. How were ideas considered 400 years ago when they challenged church dogma? They were often considered as hateful and evil. In modern times reasonable alternatives to the views of secular authority are despised. Students on campus are shunned as out-group members. Speakers are barred, or cast out from campus, or shouted down to keep their message from being heard; after all they are heretics speaking against the secular dogma. Dissenters are dehumanized by pop culture.
