Peter,
All short sales are margin sales so you need a margin account. You must have 1/2 the amount of the sale price in your account. If the stock is at $20 and you short 100 shares you need $1000 of buying power in your account. The sale proceeds are added to your account balance and there isn't any margin interest charged on the amount. Todays spike would have been great for me to add but I was away from the market when it happened. I can't give you advice about your plan to short AVNT or any other stock so good luck whatever you decide.
