He's an idiot. Really. It is that simple. Or to use a highfalutin term, he is a pathological narcissist. And he believes he can get away with pretty much anything (short of shooting someone on 5th Avenue, and he isn't really sure about that limitation either).

I think that while he's doing all of the Putin ass kissing, he feels that by finishing his statement with something like, "I do respect him, but I don't know if I'll get along with him" is enough to make Americans think that he's really not involved with Putin. Even though Trump frequently loves to toot his own horn by saying that he is "like, really a smart guy" in reality he is not all that bright. He just thinks he is.
