Just saw your post on benchmarking software, thank you. The chip in mine is xeon e5-1650, socket LGA2011. It has six cores and on cpubenchmark.net it scores similarly to i7-6700K for a popular chip reference. But on an apples to apples basis of 6 cores and same socket chipset a more precise comparison is the i7-3930K. I booted up the box for the first time last night and it worked fine although I first did a full CMOS reset by removing the CMOS battery for 10 minutes, and then manually reset the clock and date in the bios. It booted into win10 intro screen no problem. The POST on this is a bit slow, and to be expected with such an old spinning hdd. Swapping into the ssd should speed that up a bit. I was pleased to see the bios had already been upgraded to the most recent and the cpu can be upgraded to a newer version chip, and possibly an 8 core xeon but unsure beyond that and upgrading the cpu is the last thing I'd consider, focusing on upgrading other things first and if I ever did upgrade cpu I'd look for a used server pull on ebay.

The deals site where I first learned of the newegg sale (actually sold through a third party on their site) had a bunch of comments including from prior buyers who had refitted the z420 in a similar way to what I have in mind so that was helpful and saved time pointing me in the right direction, like buying a ram cooler for the second bay of slots. After that post with picture of inside I realized I needed a 3.5" to 2.5" bracket to mount the ssd and that was ordered. Waiting on ram, hard drive bracket, and thinking about video card but have a lead there. The last guy I helped refit a workstation said he has a spare card of this and they can be had under $200 on sale. It would be overkill for my needs but curious to try it for free if it even works! It has an 8 pin connector but in the comments one of the prior buyers said the 8 pin of this type of amd based card worked directly into the 6 pin because the extra two pins are for grounding. That would be interesting if it works and will keep you posted but cannot meet him until Monday or Tuesday at the earliest.

Forgot to add the basic nvidia quadro card inside box came with a dual dvi adapter, but without keyboard or mouse. For $350 I already have Ferrari level power in the CPU with a below average and basic supporting set of hardware but that can already run dual screens and look and work fine for nearly all tasks, except gaming, and read/write intense tasks. Have yet to plug ethernet cable into box for any software updates but I suspect it doesn't need many and more importantly, whatever initial benchmarking I do should be in its original unwrapped state. The next week could be interesting as all the parts, hopefully, arrive.
