The best of modern ethics, democracy and freedom was shaped by books and education, not the churches. In fact the churches have held back modern civilization by not allowing people to think freely for hundreds of years upon the punishment of torture and death for "heresy"!

I think we should replace primitive ideas which are harmful e.g. racism, homophobia and misogyny with modern realistic ideas and replace myths with facts and reason. False information is harmful to children.

I think pubic institutions should stick to teaching facts and reason.

Since you asked, my kids were raised pretty much "free range" without rules or punishment. The only thing I demanded were kindness and honesty. I tried to teach my children to learn and think from an early age and sent my kids out into the world to learn in the public schools, with the exception of pre school where I sent them to our Montesorrie school.

I never punished either child and never once told them to do their homework. Both children were as good as gold and honor students. I never had a bit of trouble with either child.

My older daughter went to UC Berkeley and Loyola law school. My younger daughter went to the University of Oregon, is a scientist and administers a large organic fertilizer company..

Both children have stable long term relationships and story book lives. They are raising both grand children effectively as atheist's; and both children are as honest and kind as the day is long and very responsible adults who also give greatly to our society and poor. And both are very liberal as is my entire clan.

I think free pre school for all children who want it starting at 2.5 years would be the best social program we could do. Education can cut down crime and increase productivity better than any other means. We are all strong believers in the public school system as it now exists.

So, you think it's totally wrong to be cognizant of how religion has shaped our institutions and societies?

Or were your kids too intellectually incurious to have come to their own conclusions?

Me thinks you doeth protest too much.

I'm talking about kids NOT getting a good education being able to GET one.

And I'd prefer they they got that opportunity outside the "profit making" corporate structure of Charter Schools.
