I will fully concede your point that an openly Atheist or non believer is highly unlikely anytime soon to win the presidency in America. But don't think that is somehow solely on the catholic or christian faith shoulders. You would be hard pressed to find muslim americans willing to vote for an atheist, although I could be wrong.

Same goes for prejudice towards gays. That isn't only christians. You will find nearly any monotheistic faith, Islam, Judaism, Christianity leaning in the same direction on that issue. In terms of christianity it does surprise me though because Jesus taught that all humanity is sinful. For example, if one says they can not bake a cake for a gay person because they are sinful, can they then bake a cake for a liar? I can't discount that men always seem to twist anything good for their own control and vice. But I would caution that just as we try to prevent people from prejudice against others because they are different (sex, color, gender etc) we also should not prejudice ourselves just because they are christian, islam, hindu etc.
