RESEARCH ALERT - SBC deal with SNET is EPS neutral
NEW YORK, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Merrill Lynch telecommunications analyst Daniel Reingold said he viewed positively SBC Communications Inc's (NYSE:SBC - news) proposed acquisition of Southern New England Telecommunications Inc (NYSE:SNG - news).
-- said deal is ''EPS neutral.'' Said the acquisition will be ''non-dilutive initially and will likely be accretive in subsequent years.''

-- said complementary wireless operations would create a larger footprint in the Northeast. SBC is already in Boston, Upstate New York and Washington, D.C. The SNET deal would add Connecticut and parts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

-- said deal could stir a new wave of consolidation in telecom industry among other independent phone companies such as Cincinnati Bell Inc (NYSE:CSN - news), Frontier Corp (NYSE:FRO - news) and possibly Alltel Corp (OTC BB:ALTEM - news; NYSE:AT - news) and Century Telephone Enterprises Inc (NYSE:CTL - news).
