There are also those people who do "the right thing" even when they know they might be despised for it. That has an 'over the shoulder' flavor to it. You can credit conscience to some extent.

Seems to me that a mirror works. You have to live with yourself, preferably like yourself. Perhaps it's because I'm more independent than most but I look over my own shoulder and I had better like the view. I see that more as self esteem than conscience, but perhaps that's splitting hairs.

Trustworthy is probably the highest and most easily broken characteristic when it comes to relationships

Of course, different people have different ideas about the relative importance of trust. And about what comprises trustworthy. (As we already discovered in the context of Trump, you and I have different ideas re the latter.)
