"Why would anyone be good and not murder people if they didn't believe in a higher power?"

I was told something similar in the early 1980s. My only thought was "I am glad you found your religion". Anyone who feels that the only reason not to behave in a despicable manner is because there is a superior being who would punish them, needs a keeper.

So he did credit his good behavior to a deity- at least inferentially, by suggesting people without one wouldn't have good behavior.

Now that you mention it, I have a vague recollection of that. I recall a Thanksgiving discussion in which he insisted that I couldn't feel thankful unless there was a deity to thank, which suggests that his deity would have a receptor for the thanks.

Perhaps identification with deism was a rejection of Judaism and Christianity but not entirely of their deity.
