I'm not sure whether I've ever admitted this to a living soul before, but I've done the billing for my department in 3 different hospitals. Back about '74, I got in a fight with my mean evil money-grubbing boss about charging for a very brief and unsuccessful resuscitation, and asked her if I should charge the family for the box of kleenex I gave them. Today, she would prolly say "yes". Back then, she said, "Poker at my place tomorrow". "You can't do it unless it is less expensive." In theory, taking out the for-profit middlemen (the insurance companies) will do that, and the only way to find out is by trying,. "No, there will not be single payer" is probably right..
