Wiseowl. Excellent point. A yield drop of .1% on a 100,000 dollar future position equals a 1000 dollar increase in the position's value. This helps to explain where a lot of the money going into the U.S. stock market is coming from. One can borrow yen at 0.5% and buy U.S. treasuries at near 6% yield and a money tree develops. The only problem is this game has no exit strategy. All exits are self-feeding. Sooner or later this game will end.

Speaking of currency devaluations, in the early 60's I lived in Japan. I can still remember that my father would give us one dollar a week allowance. I would then exchange it for 500 yen and go off the military base to go shopping.

Welsh Credit Card Hacker Sentenced

SWANSEA, Wales (AP) - A hacker who broke into e-commerce Internet sites in five countries and stole information on more than 26,000 credit card holders was sentenced Friday to three years of probation and psychiatric treatment.

Raphael Gray, 19, expressed relief after the sentencing at Swansea Crown Court, saying he had expected to be imprisoned after pleading guilty to 10 charges of computer fraud.

Gray was arrested in March 2000 at his home in southern Wales following investigations by the FBI (news - web sites), the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Internet security consultants and local police.

He later admitted breaking into nine e-commerce Web sites in the United States, Canada, Thailand, Japan and Britain over a period of several months.

Using the screen name ``Curador,'' Gray then posted credit card details of thousands of people on his own Web site. The FBI estimated potential losses to the credit card holders and affected companies at $3 million.

A second Welsh teen-ager who was arrested with Gray was released without charge.

Gray has maintained he committed the crimes to prove that security on the Internet is inadequate. ``I would do it all again, but another time I would choose to ensure that I acted legally,'' he told reporters after sentencing.

Gray's defense team argued that he suffered chronic low self-esteem and committed the crimes after an unstable mental state was aggravated by a blow to the head.

Judge Gareth Davies ordered Gray to serve three years of probation, community service and treatment.

An Internet security firm that provided expert testimony for the prosecution criticized the sentence, saying it was not tough enough to deter other hackers from committing crimes.

``The crime is tantamount to stealing lots and lots of credit cards out of your and mine's pockets,'' said Neil Barrett, technical director of Information Risk Management.

``Frankly, I would have liked to see him ... go to prison,'' Barrett said.

Newmont Mining Corporation (ticker: NEM, exchange: New York Stock Exchange) News Release - 11/9/2001

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Newmont Responds to 'Mini Tender' Offer

DENVER, Nov 9, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE: NEM) received notification that TRC Capital Corporation of Toronto has made an unsolicited "mini tender" offer on October 30, 2001 to purchase up to 5.3 million common shares of Newmont, or approximately 2.7 percent of Newmont's total shares outstanding, at a price of $20.65 per share. Newmont recommends that its shareholders reject this offer and cautions its shareholders that the offer is approximately five percent below the closing price of $21.66 per Newmont share on the New York Stock Exchange on the day before the offer and at a 9 percent discount below yesterday's closing price of $22.77 per share.
Shareholders are also advised that TRC Capital has reserved the right to withdraw its offer at any time, at its sole discretion. In addition, shareholders tendering to the "mini tender" offer by TRC Capital would not be able to withdraw their shares during a period from 5:00 p.m. New York time, November 27, 2001, to at least until after December 27, 2001. TRC Capital has reserved the right to retain all such deposited Newmont shares tendered throughout this period and may decline to purchase those Newmont shares if TRC Capital so chooses for any reason, including in the event that the offer price exceeds the market price of the common shares.

Newmont does not endorse this unsolicited offer. Shareholders are advised to consult with their investment advisors and to exercise caution with this "mini tender" offer. "Mini tender" offers typically seek less than five percent of a company's stock, thereby avoiding many disclosure requirements of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). TRC Capital has made numerous mini tender offers for other companies' shares. The SEC has issued an investor alert regarding mini tender offers on their web site at www.sec.gov/investor/pubs/minitend.htm .
