The coast highway is the scenic route.

The area where 1 meets up with the 101 in Leggit, is a nice twisty road which rides several ridges, and has many trees.

My wife and I have taken it from Fort Bragg, to Leggit, and from Redondo to where you have to get back on the 101 in order to go any further north.

I'm not sure how far north you are, but if you come down the 101 through Eureka, you can also do a turn through Ferndale and take the Lost Coast Road which will lead you into the Humboldt Redwood Park, as it reconnects with the 101. It is a cathedral in that forest and you will want to stop and be with the quietude.

The Coast road is very scenic as Wharf Rat has said.
