ALL: Sony inks deal with Next Level regarding set top boxes.

Included in the press release was this statement:

"Sony technology, such as video game equipment and digital video disk (DVD) players, may eventually be integrated into the new set-top boxes. In addition, the boxes will include a computer modem, allowing for high-speed connection to the Internet."

Next Level has the basic set top box shell which now will carry the Sony brand name. They have agreed to sell 15 million of these boxes to a consortium of cable companies headed by TCI for approx. $4.5 billion over the next 3-5 years. However, they are looking for an operating system for the box which has been narrowed down to Microsoft and Netscape. Microsoft has the inside track. Next Level is also looking for a processor for their set top box and has been taking bids. With LSI's strong Sony connection (PlayStation and DVD) what is everyone's opinion as to an LSI chip powering the set top box. I believe Intel is considered the favorite at this point.

The set top boxes LSI has been involved with for BBC are for satellite set top boxes correct? The Next Level set top box is for digital cable. Would the set top box processor be the same or very similar whether its for a satellite or digital cable set top box? They are both receiving digital signals after all.
