Pentiums, which come w/ MS Office 97 "free"

Tch tch! Far, far too expensive already.

But seriously, there will come a time (if it hasn't already occurred) when Microsoft will have to pay PC vendors to load their software. Mark my words....

Java is a general purpose application programming language for enterprise networks, fashion jewlery, smart-cards and web pages. It can be compiled to native code just like C++ and it's cross-platform, too. It's secure, threaded and infinitely more robust than the equivalent C or C++ code. The new quarter-gig CPUs can plow through Java like a really fast processor through code.
