GZ, you know your history..... John and Paul were heavily influenced by Buddy Holiday and his Silver Crickets.... the Beatles initially started off with the Silver Beetles and then in typical Beatle -esq humor and love of word games... changed the BEET to Beat.

The Rolling Stones who were much more heavily influenced by American blues artists such as Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf,BB King, T-Bone Walker, Lead Belly , Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, etc.

They were said to have been looking at Muddy Waters single "Rollin' Stone"/ "Walkin' Blues" when they decided that Rolling Stone with in the plural would be a good band name.

This song Howlin' Wolf - Smoke Stack Lightning

is one that was covered by several bands including John Mayall's Blues Breakers when Clapton was in the band. I had a very inexpensive CD that had the Blues Breakers live version of smoke stack lighting on it.

Jimi Hendrix created an excellent titled song "Midnight Lighting" in the last year of his life.
