Think you're okay to add a M.2 SSD to your HP Envy.

Here's a few links about M.2 SSDs used in PCIe slots.

arstechnica.com

Also, PCIe slots are backwards compatible.

Sorry, I have no personal experience with M.2 ssd, all my motherboards are too old to have M.2 slots built directly into them.

If I were to install one though I'd upgrade the bios and chipset drivers if there are newer versions. Also you might have to enter the bios and change the boot settings and boot order if not automatically detected. It would be a shame if there's a M.2 slot on your board and for whatever reason HP did not enable it to work. I wonder about that since you've searched and didn't find other users doing a similar type of upgrade on the same HP model.
