Parents always think it is an empty threat when a kid says he's going to run away if he doesn't get what he wants, until he does run away. In most cases things go badly for that type of kid. The temperament in California is getting more and more radical to the point where you guys could do something that drastic in spite of the potential consequences. If you got the chance and were overtaken forcefully, it might result in a war to reclaim California for the US.
