I've found crossing the US / Canadian border with a rental car raises lots of suspicion in both directions. I always just read a magazine as they go through their bullshit inspections. It's been my perception that the border agents feel cheated if you don't watch them as they open your empty trunk / boot and root around. I think the last thing they're hoping for is to inspire total indifference on your part. Crossing into Canada you often have to wait several minutes until the guy shows up at the window.
