Post #8193 gave a partial list of some things embedded systems may use dates for.
This list was given to me by someone who has spent the last 2 decades working with embedded systems in Nasa's satellite tracking stations, and ground network as a technician, field engineer, systems programmer, systems analyst and software engineer. I would think he has enough credentials to be believable.

My Company, a computer perhipheral manufacturer, also has a 'Need to Know" policy. Very careful about what gets out in public.
