I suspect, leaving NYC is going to result in a culture shock no matter where you move. <g/ng> For sure it will be a trade off. You just can't have an NYC like experience and a reduced cost of living...at least not in the US.

Also, there are lots of blue cities in red states that you may not to rule out and even some nice blue areas inside of red cities...though most times voting there feels like spitting into the wind. Plus you think sometimes "Oh no, they have me surrounded!"

Anyhow I am sure you will enjoy your adventure and trying before you buy, is for sure the way to go.

beware of sky high property taxes and massive red tape in Oregon.
There's a whole culture built up of folks living in S. Washington that drive to and buy everything in Oregon.
