I remember a day in Mexico City, standing in a line that came out of a bank and stretched down the sidewalk, so that my husband and I could buy 50 peso gold coins. These coins had one ounce of gold in them and the price was $92 each.

I think the year was 1971 or 1972. At any rate, the world had gone off the gold standard, and the price at that time must have been in the vicinity of $90 or so an ounce. We were young and knew nothing, just happened to be vacationing at the time. Strolling the streets close to our hotel, we saw the line and asked what was going on. The consensus of those in line who spoke English was that "gold would go up!"

So like a pair of little sheep, we just followed the crowd and waited in that line for about an hour and a half to make our first 'investment' of ten gold coins, lol.

I remember being surprised at how heavy they were.
