NYC has a great transportation system ( busses and subway) and they care about their citizens a lot more than most states, so, of course taxes are going to be higher here. They spend a lot on services, which you don't realize until you spend some time in other cities. But prices here are so over the top, it doesn't pay to live here anymore once you hit your mid 60s unless you want to continue working full time forever.
Once you acquire some good money, it pays to leave here. Weather is pretty severe here too. Winters can be brutal with a lot of snow and summers can be very humid. Geez, we were in the low teens last night.
I will miss Broadway and all the comedy clubs, restaurants and people, but I won't miss Mayor Diblasio and all the outrageous price increases in regard to property taxes. I have had enough of it.

I think my property taxes have gone up close to 50% over the past 7 years. We are ready in spirit to leave tomorrow.
