The vast majority of liberals will tell you they want single-payer, sort of like what we have with Medicare, or what they have in Canada. Obama disappointed many liberals when he did that. The irony with regard to Obama, was that he turned out to be a very moderate president, but the liberals felt they needed to respect the fact that he was the first African-American president and so didn't say too much.

All the Republicans want to do is throw everybody out there at the mercy of the capitalist system which is vicious. Even the most highly knowledgeable people have a hard time knowing how to pick an insurance company they can depend on their own. And the capitalist system has no incentives to help people with pre existing conditions.

Right now there's a fight in the Democratic Party between the left led by Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren and the moderates led by Obama and Hillary. In the end the liberals are going to win.

Here is what the liberals thought they were getting with Obama.

FDR: :organized money is as dangerous as organized mobs."

Three minute FDR speech. Worth a listen.
