M. Scott Peck who write "The Road Less Traveled" also wrote a badly written and repetitive book titled "The People of the Lie". While not a great book the message is valuable.

Evil people lie and try to hide who they are, primarily to hide their evil nature from themselves.

If you want to avoid evil people, avoid people who patriotically "wrap themselves in the flag" and or make a great show of their piety and good works. These people are almost always scum of the Earth.

Are these pious people gangsters, child molesters, or worse? The correct answer is you don't want to stick around to find out.

Normal people don't make shows of their patriotism, their good works, or their piety - these are all "People of the Lie" trying to hide their true nature from you and from themselves.
