NEW YORK, Jan 5 (Reuters) - The Nasdaq Composite Index rose
more than 12 points Monday, led by strength in bellwether
high-technology shares like Intel Corp , making two
straight higher closes to kick off the new year.
The index finished up 12.60 points, or 0.80 percent, at
1594.13, on unofficial trading volume of more than 684 million
shares. On Friday, the index closed up 11.18 points.
Traders, however, said that despite the day's gains, Asian
economic woes still posed a potential problem for Nasdaq
shares.
"It's those things (big technology shares) that will hold
the index up for a while until the Asia flu comes blowing
through again," one trader said. "Everyone sort of put Asia on
the back burner, but it's still perking," he added.
Intel was the most actively traded issue Monday, gaining
1-7/8 to 74-1/2. Also logging gains were shares of Sun
Microsystems Inc , and Applied Materials Inc ,
up 2-1/8 to 33-1/8.
The day's big loser was Netscape Commuincations Corp
, which lost 4-13/16 to 18-9/16 after saying it would
report a fourth-quarter loss amid pricing competition from
Microsoft Corp .
