Ascend Promotes Roger Boyce to Head New Business Unit

Enterprise Access Business Unit Devoted to Connecting Corporate
Enterprise to the Public Data Network

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 6, 1998--Ascend Communications, Inc.,
(NASDAQ:ASND - news) announced today that Roger Boyce has been promoted to the
newly-created position of Vice President and General Manager, Enterprise Access Business Unit. In
his expanded role, Boyce will assume responsibility for Ascend's key Security and Remote Access
products, in addition to the Multimedia Access products over which he currently has responsibility.
Boyce will report directly to Ascend's president and CEO Mory Ejabat.

''Roger has done an excellent job building our multimedia access business,'' said Ejabat. ''Now, as
Ascend's Network Service Provider (NSP) customers leverage our Core Systems, Network
Management and Access products to build the New Public Network (NPN), we are asking Roger to
drive solutions that will give enterprise customers secure, reliable, high-bandwidth access to the
NPN.''

Over the past two years, revenue from Multimedia Access products has doubled under Boyce's
leadership. As a result of this success, Boyce has invested in next generation solutions that leverage
technology across Ascend's broad product offerings.

''Ascend has a wide range of new products and solutions that our customers will use to build, and
take advantage of, the Public Data Network,'' said Boyce. ''What you will see coming out of my
group will be products that continue to offer best-of-breed remote, multimedia and security solutions
for our NSP and corporate customers.''

The new business unit combines three existing business units under one:

The Remote Products Business Unit, which includes the Pipeline family of remote access
products for consumer, small and branch offices as well as enterprise customers;
The Security Products Business Unit, which includes Ascend's complete line of secure access
firewall and authentication products, built around industry-standards such as IPSec;
