NEWS:Adaptec Introduces External RAID Controllers for the Mac MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--January 6, 1998--Adaptec, Inc. today announced new hardware RAID controllers for the Macintosh platform that will provide a simple and cost-effective way to implement high performance and fault tolerant storage. Hardware RAID uses a dedicated CPU and memory which allows for much higher performance than software RAID which relies on the Macintosh processor. This is especially significant to Mac publishing, prepress, digital video, and multimedia professionals who are searching for an I/O solution to meet their high performance and scalability requirements. Adaptec's external RAID controllers bridge the gap between the Macintosh and the external storage subsystem's I/O. The AEC-4412BS connects a single-ended SCSI host system to the external storage subsystem at a maximum distance of 3 meters. The AEC-7412B connects a 100MB/s fibre channel host interface to the external storage subsystem at a maximum distance of 25 meters over copper or 10 kilometers over fibre wiring. Both products support RAID levels 0, 1, 0/1, 3, and 5. The new products come in a canister design that fits into any standard 5.25" half height device bay, eliminating the need for custom enclosures or unique storage backplanes. This saves valuable configuration time, makes installation simple, offers flexibility for host system connectivity, and lowers the expense involved in building external storage solutions. Also, customers can experience new host system technologies and power while preserving legacy storage investments because both products are field upgradeable. The host interface can be changed on site by swapping out a field upgradeable daughterboard, allowing for convenience and minimizing costly storage downtime. "Macintosh users have unique and demanding storage needs for intensive multimedia computing," said Jean-Eric Garnier, business and marketing manager for Adaptec's Macintosh products. "Because Adaptec offers the whole solution with RAID controllers, Fibre Channel host adapters and PowerDomain SCSI accelerators for the Mac platform, users can implement a robust storage I/O connection that is fully tested to be optimal on both ends of the wire." Pricing and Availability The AEC-7412B and the AEC-4412BS are available immediately through Adaptec's normal distribution channels. Manufacturer's suggested retail prices begin at $3000.
