In NYC, every child can apply to up to 5 Public High Schools throughout the city in all 5 boroughs regardless of where they live. The top specialized high schools in NYC are public and require a test to get accepted and anyone can sign up to take the test.
Private schools are primarily for Manhattan children who can't deal with or handle ghetto kids. The quality of education tends to be much higher in public schools. But class size is smaller in private schools. Lots of single gender Catholic schools have closed down. Most Catholic kids in NYC prefer coed schools. And many of the Jesuit schools have been forced to change or go out of business. Also, most Catholic kids in NYC are pro choice, in terms of abortion.
Private schools, like Dalton are more of a status thing than anything else. But they are not impressing anyone outside of the students who go there and the families who send their children to those schools.
