Yes. On your tv set, look for HDMI ports. You need more than one.
Get one of the players - Roku, Amazon Fire stick, Apple tv. From there you can see various offerings.

Directv Now streams the TV shows - get the Fire Stick - and you can see downloads for HULU, Netflix, etc. I believe eventually it will come with the local tv channels.

Cord free for several years now.

Roku makes the best appliance hands down

We use netflix, amazon prime, hulu and sling during college football season. Turn off sling service the rest of the year.

Add a good high speed internet service and an antenna for high def locals and the package is complete.

Yes, done so twice.

When we were faced with the FIOS coming into our communities in No. Va. No longer did I have an
ordinary antenna. When the company came into my front yard without permission and began to dig
to install an underground Cable of internet reception and theoretically for television.

A long story; eventually as I would have a television show on connection
via FIOS failed. I just called and pulled the plug on the TV system. Stayed with the computer
system but always having problem with it.

The second story comes in Arkansas-------when I went to help my brother temporarily, I soon found
that the "caregiver" was watching television nonstop. Day and night and if she wasn't watching it
was on and disturbing everyone

The first bill I saw was for over $200. As my brother had previously put me on his account. I
I cut the junk shows of the provider and gave orders to the caregiver that there would be no more
constant television on.

What a difference------suddenly my brother began a recovery. As I got him out of the house
and saying hello to people friends who knew him----went out to eat, to the library, to listen to music
took him and yes to the Library . He was well read and loved talking to people about the books.

I have never gone back to TV . So for me how to break the computer cycle-----almost impossible
as in our urban society in No. Va. as we are dependent upon communication for almost
everything we do.

Television I have eliminated but not the computer system. Have stayed with Cell Phone and with
Computer.

I'd love to cut the cord to cable TV,
...
Anybody else been down this road?

Depends upon what connections you have in the back.

If it's flat screen that is not like one of the first ones you probably have all the connections you need.

I bought a separate Apple TV box (there are others),subscribed to Netflix (Amazon or Hulu are other possibilities) and of course can view internet stuff.

For broadcast TV, I have an amplified flat antenna.

But then my family is not addicted to sports or specific channels.

Now you still need an internet provider...

When I got FIOS, I turned down the "$10 additional/month" TV offer...

I may have to buy a new, smarter TV.

I would recommend no - whatever path you take, better to get an external box.

Friends & extended family have had all sorts of issues with dumb smart TVs.

And that path would be cheaper.

If you do go the "smart" TV path, stay away from Samsung (both software issues as well as hardware).
