I like your advice. It's what I've told my neice and nephews.

We received different advice from my Grandfather who told us we could anything we wanted to do, just so long as you're the best. At the time we appreciated his vote of confidence.

It's very motivating advice, but it's tough on the kids, like my little brother or one of my Mom's cousin's not equipped to constantly being the best. And of course there was the expectation we'd travel and learn other languages. Not from our parents of course who had already rebelled against the cult of excellence.

Music in my car in a language other than English would set my brother off, but two of his three sons are like my Sister and myself and already good with other languages and the oldest spent a Summer in Europe. So he realizes everyone is different. But the middle son who lived with us for a year is like my brother, always looking for the shortcut, not studious - he's the one I don't understand. Yet it's tough for my brother as well as he recognizes his own mistakes in his middle son.

There's a lot of different ways to be in life and you ultimately have to do what makes you happy, or you should.
