the Labor Force is defined as all Americans older than the age of 17.

Wrong.

The labor force is defined as all Americans over the age of 16 who either are employed or are looking for work. Those who are disabled, retired, or who are discouraged workers (looked without success for work for 6 months or more) are not counted.

The labor participation rate drops are significant even when broken out by age and it seems folly to ignore them and disguise them behind a faulty unemployment number. IMHO: The labor participation rate along with the enormous food stamp numbers, the nations prescription drug abuse epidemic, and even the election of Trump clearly indicate a festering disease in our society that needs to be addressed.
