Some like yourself think the discouraged unemployed should be bused to California for 6 am picking time for broccoli and lettuce at minimum wage. I do think this is not only harsh but more importantly ridiculous and is simply not going to work well for California farmers.

Another alternative Germany has used to assist unemployed workers, from former East Germany in their case, is to help find jobs in former West Germany and help them relocate where they are hired.

For most moving to a city they've never lived in without a firm offer of employment simply isn't possible, so Germany has encouraged firms to send hiring teams to former East German cities to find and hire workers, and then assist them in relocation.

Unless we're willing to emulate Germany and find a way to direct new job opportunities to these typically "rust belt"and rural areas, or direct employment directors to hire in these areas for relocation, we can expect the unemployment in these areas to persist in these regions.

Hoping these former manufacturing workers will be willing to work for less than the cost of a robot is a dead end, as is banning robots. The solution has to inhabit the world of reality.
