John, IMHO we are in the mist of some very radical changes since 1993 or thereabout.
The journey and the changes in the social economic map is only accelerating.
Until 3 or 4 generation ago the society embraced the wisdom of the elders and even if very puritan the social values where far superior to today.

Now we are back to a more primitive stage even that technologically substantially more advanced.
One good example are the Western movies of the 1950/60 about the wild lawless west of the US - the decadence of then is returning even that the use of firearms is not as common, but what is common is the killing instinct and all the vices that go with it. Some people/employees will do whatever it takes to undermine or just topple others if by plain lies fake events presented as facts and you name it and no one cares.

Today a person with ample experience in his profession at 55 is pushed aside as unusable and as if he is starting to be brain dead not to mention if you are over 65 you are useless, and later even a burden on society.

The notion of the sanctity of life today depends on how much benefits you bring to the society, if you are a burden to society and you need a more than usual medical treatment or hospitalization forget about the notion of the sanctity of life, and this is from personal experience.
