Good observations, I think. US system isn't the optimum at resource allocation, but free markets do tend to do better than some.

A1,
Your "greedy algorithm" is a fascinating analogy. I would like to read more about it in terms of computer application. I do not know if it is the same thought string but in my dealings with the Japanese over the years I began to also question the conventional "long view" wisdom. I watched many specific situations where the "horse was ridden till it collapsed". It prompted me to start feeling uneasy about the whole notion. I think ultimately competition forces the best achievable resource allocation but I would favor small companies in niche markets in searching for an exemplar. Politics are the biggest enemy of resource allocation, without doubt. In that context I can understand your concern as applied to Asia. I would add a second major concern to your concern about corruptive pracices here and that would be environmental. There is a fast growing liability IMO there.
Please comment more on your thought train as you develop it.
Best,
Stitch

My analogy of a market/competition driven economy would be nature. Nature does not put all its eggs in one basket, like the diversity of species ensures the success of some, the multiple decision makers in a market of ideas ensure that some ideas would survive for a while. Just as a democracy is supposed to guard us against Hitlers a market guards us against the sterility of Industrial policy.
This would mean that ensuring competition is one of the key roles of the guvment. A pilot on the boeing thread maintains that there has not been real progress in aircraft design, possibly because BA is the only game in town? At least BA deals only in one industry. The Samsungs of the world think a small group can have the answers to every industry if given enough capital.
