Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called on Sunday for Germany and Japan to work together to champion free trade.

“German and Japan have one thing in common: We have both come this far because we reaped the benefits of trade and investment,” Abe said in Hannover, Germany, where he appeared at the opening of Germany’s annual CeBIT trade fair focused on computers and digital business and addressed an audience including German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

“Japan, having grown through free trade and investment, wants to be the champion upholding open systems alongside Germany,” Abe added.

The German and Japanese leaders were both coming off a week of meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. Merkel last week met Trump in Washington, while his Secretary of State Rex Tillerson met Abe on his first official trip to Asia.
