DBS companies entering into HDTV: SATELLITE WEEK: DirecTV will get 6 channels from U.S. Satellite Bcstg. (USSB) in March in move that will create single, basic DSS programming package and potentially free USSB transponder space for high-definition (HD) transmissions, sources said last week. DirecTV and USSB offer competing and complementary DBS services from transponder capacity they share on Hughes-built satellite located at 101 degrees W. Action potentially enables USSB to offer HDTV, using part of 5 transponders it leases at 101 degrees W for high-definition TV (HDTV) transmissions. HBO, which is key part of USSB packages, has said it's developing HDTV programming. "There's no question that it frees up transponder space which will be used for additional movies, but whether that means some high-definition programming is far from finalized," source said. "HBO is very serious about high definition, and that would be the easiest road to take to high-definition because it involves movies." USSB Pres.-CEO Stanley Hubbard declined comment and DirecTV officials weren't available by our deadline....... receivers with built-in DTV decoder could be available to handle high-definition transmissions by time service begins, sources said. -------------------------------------------------------------------- My read is that the DBS companies will lead the way in introducing HDTV to the consumer and that all four of the major DBS companies will offer some HDTV services by the end of the year. Conversely, cable systems will push convergence. It should be again noted, Zenith will earn VSB royalties (both interlaced and progressive scanned) on every HDTV, SDTV, set-top box and PC capable of receiving and displaying any of the 17 digital standards approved by the FCC.
