I fully agree, corruption is the reason for most everything wrong... and yes, I meant domestic, but that was early this morning before I had my usual 3 extra large cups of espresso... thanks for the correction...<g>

The reason we won't have a single payer system anytime soon is the insurance industry. They were the principal writers of the Obamacare bill, with their enormous lobbying war chest, and they made sure their own self interest came first. And they had the taxpayer as a backstop the first few years, guaranteeing they didn't take a hit. Then, they wrote it so that they could walk away any time they wanted, if it became less profitable over time.
Health care is an incredibly complicated issue to govern; I don't think we have the brainpower in congress to get it right.

My own feeling is that people quickly learn to game any system. Young workers, who rarely use their insurance, figured out quickly that, with a $7500 deductible, and $600 monthly premiums, they were better off paying out of pocket for their care. I see it every day in my practice.

I would love to see a governmental positive incentive tied to BMI-- paying people to not gain weight. People will usually do what's in their own self-interest. Tie a $$ sign to something, and people will take notice. The diabetes epidemic with the associated fatty liver is going to really drive health care costs up in the future. We need to get ahead of this before it's too late.
