Which may be tantamount to saying picking good short candidates is important because there you sell first.
For long positions the implication of being good at selling in a tanking market is less clear because it depends on the investment horizon; for traders it may mean minimizing losses.
In a tanking market proceeds from long positions could be secondary though (unless one plans to make all the money only on technical bounces against the tide).
