I am not the one who made the decisions regarding architecture on sub-$1000 computers. The limited expandability is the price one pays to get one of the cheap computers. These people probably want a computer to run Excel, surf the net, type and fax a letter, or play games. All of these functions do not require ANY outside storage. Games run from CD-Roms. Excel files typically are smaller than 100 kilobytes. Surfing the net and getting email does not require additional storage. Text files to be faxed are very tiny.

The box-makers have strategically made the decision that in order to have a case with additional slots, you have to pay more for a major upgrade to the whole system. This is just how things are. These cheap computers leave an internal Zip out in the cold.
