Hitachi DVD drive, yes. but you're assuming Cube for the chip.

It may be a good assumption, but let's look for something more concrete.

TEKTRONIX: Tektronix Delivers Digital Media Foundation initiative to
ease digital transition

Presswire - January 06, 1998 14:34

M2 PRESSWIRE-6 January 1998-TEKTRONIX: Tektronix Delivers Digital Media Foundation initiative to ease
broadcasters digital transition (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

* Rolls out studio quality MPEG-2 Codec, new compact router

Tektronix, Inc., a digital video systems leader, today formally announced a strategy to ease broadcasters transition from
analog to digital infrastructures. The Digital Media Foundation initiative delivers a distributed network of storage devices linked
via audio/video routers and data networks and provides an open system environment for applications ranging from editing and
live production to on-air replay.

Also in support of the DMF, Tektronix today announced an extremely compact addition to its Series 7000 router product
family and a studio-quality MPEG-2 Codec for streaming high-quality video data over telecommunications networks. These
products work together to link existing analog composite systems to the new digital infrastructure, and provide broadcasters
new means of sharing and distributing material. Tektronix assures quality in the digital environment every step of the way with
leading measurement solutions.

"In an industry in which time is money, the DMF provides faster access to more material over wider areas and enables users
to move and manage media throughout a broadcast facility, regardless of whether the data is stored on tape, disk or other
device," said Timothy Thorsteinson, Tektronix Video and Networking Division president. "In a nutshell, Tektronix DMF
increases the value of customers most important asset -- their content -- by making is more accessible."

Bricks and Mortar of the DMF

The DMF initiative enables customers to build toward a digital future gradually without having to write off their existing
technology investments. DMF does not require customers to throw out their existing tape-based solutions. Rather it will
integrate these by tracking material on all media formats. Its open systems environment ensures interoperability between
products from different suppliers and increases flexibility within the entire broadcast/news production workflow.

The first layer of "bricks" in the Digital Media Foundation initiative is formed by the large and growing installed base of Profile
video file servers. Profile, which forms the foundation of many customers transition to video servers, now holds a market
position two times greater than that of its nearest competitor.

Other key elements of the DMF initiative include Tektronix Data Libraries, Grass Valley routers and systemization products,
and Tektronix high-speed networking to allow new means of sharing and distributing material.

MPEG Codecs, Routers Increase Strength of DMF Initiative

The new MPEG-2 4:2:2P Codec enables broadcasters to move material between facilities more easily than ever before with
less bandwidth. The broadcast-quality MPEG-2 Codec provides a compressed digital standards-based alternative to the
traditional proprietary uncompressed means of transporting video.

"Today, many broadcasters who need to transfer video from facility to facility use either microwave, satellite, or a courier
service," said Thorsteinson. "The Tektronix MPEG-2 4:2:2P Codec will give broadcasters the ability to transport video at
various bit rates over internationally standard ATM networks based on picture quality requirements. "

Tektronix led efforts that identified the need for the MPEG-2 4:2:2@ Main Level to support the contribution-quality video
demanded by broadcasters and production houses. The new 4:2:2 profile supported in the Tektronix MPEG-2 Codec is
designed to withstand multiple generations. It also comes with analog or digital video interfaces and supports 4 channels of
audio. It is the first MPEG-2 codec to come with an option for uncompressed audio. In a related announcement, Tektronix
also plans for Profile video servers to implement MPEG compression.

The new 64 x 64 video routers are the third frame size in the Series 7000DV router product family. The compact, six-rack
unit routers are one-half the size of currently available frames and ideal for use in small facilities and mobile trucks. Customers
can start with configurations as small as 32 x 32 and later expand. The new 64 x 64 frame will be available March 1, 1998.
The Tektronix system management team provides design services to assist customers in the integration of servers in their
facilities.

Open Platform Strategy

The Tektronix Open Platform Strategy assures customers a wide choice of applications in the DMF initiative. More than 50
companies have now developed applications for Profile video file servers. The platform strategy allows application developers
to standardize on Profile servers and the DMF as the storage platform of choice for their applications. In this fashion,
customers can select the best-in-class applications that best suit their needs.

Key elements of Tektronix Open Platform Strategy are open application programming interfaces (APIs), an open network
interface, published documentation, support for developers, and a commitment to support standardization efforts to ensure
interchange between manufacturers.

DMF is DTV-Ready

Tektronix serial digital infrastructure is fully 16:9 compatible. Material acquired using 16:9 format cameras can be transferred
via serial digital connections through Tektronix digital modular products, via digital routers, and can be stored on Profile
servers.

Tektronix is a portfolio of measurement, color printing and video and networking businesses dedicated to applying technology
excellence to customer challenges. Tektronix is headquartered in Wilsonville, Ore., and has operations in 23 countries outside
the United States. Founded in 1946, the company had revenues of $1.94 billion in fiscal 1997.
