We all make mistakes: <<

history may or may not matter, but phoenix tv released this day a documentary w/r to one hakka chinese trinidadian eugene chen who either was responsible for or is given credit for organising the recovery of the british imperial extra-territory concession in hankow / wuhan in 1915>>

It would have been far better to have a Hong Kong up north too. With the British Empire well-entrenched and in cahoots with Chen et al, it might have helped dissuade Japan from attacking China with all the horrors that resulted. Aligning with Great Britain would have been much better than signing up with Russia/USSR/Lenin.

Anyway, it all ended up with many decades of horror, impoverishment and general terrible economic life with Mao's maelstrom really making a mess of things. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

But looking back is of limited interest as the future is where we're going, whether we like it or not.

Hong Kong's lease was a great thing and still is. I note you have enjoyed phenomenal benefit from there being a Hong Kong.
