IBM got taken to the cleaners for much less, but Reg will tell you those guys were dolts.

Actually, I heard something that really throws cold water on the "'brave and wily Microsoft' vs. 'stupid dolts at IBM'" legend:

During OS/2 cooperative development: Gates and Ballmer, tried to sell half of Microsoft to IBM because they feared that IBM would otherwise destroy them. IBM refused to buy. Gates/Ballmer wondered why IBM wouldn't want an equity stake in their largest software partner....they took it to mean that it must mean that IBM didn't intend for Microsoft to be their partner for long--that IBM had already decided to eliminate Microsoft. So that's when Microsoft killed the OS/2 project partnership and went whole-hog after Windows--effectively declaring war on IBM.
