Ames Reports December Sales
ROCKY HILL, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 8, 1998--Ames Department Stores Inc. (NASDAQ: AMES - news) today announced net sales of $386.4 million for the five weeks ended Dec. 27, 1997, compared with net sales of $368.0 million for the five weeks ended Dec. 28, 1996, an increase of 5.0 percent. Comparable-store sales for the period were $348.7 million, compared with $333.8 million in the same period last year, an increase of 4.5 percent. Comparable-store sales are based on 275 stores.

Net sales for the 48-week year-to-date period were $2.090 billion, compared with $2.046 billion in the year-earlier period, an increase of 2.2 percent. Comparable-store sales for the period were $1.903 billion, compared with $1.865 billion last year, an increase of 2.0 percent.

Joseph R. Ettore, Ames' President and Chief Executive Officer, said, ''We were pleased with sales results for December, given the promotional nature of the holiday season. Toys, sporting goods and furniture led the way with sales well above plan and last year. Ladies' basic and intimate apparel, housewares and crafts also performed well.

''Ames is looking ahead to a strong 40th anniversary year in 1998. We will continue to listen to our customers and offer the best possible values -- Bargains by the Bagful(SM) that Ames shoppers expect every day.
