< I am totally useless for anything in the middle of the night.>

...that's just too easy...I'm going to let that one go over the plate and call it a ball (no pun intended.)

As for the rituals of the Catholic religion...I have a much different spin. I see things like the "body and blood" or "holy" water as reminders of events that I should never forget. I can see how it appears paganistic if taken literally. I am not qualified to go into great detail as a representative of the collective Catholic religion...I can only offer my humble beliefs and interpretations of the faith.

I've got to admit, I was a little disappointed in your examples (not that they weren't excellent...it's just that they are old to me) I was hoping for something from another religion, etc to use as a comparison to my own faith. When I hear of other rituals I give pause to their potential rather than being judgemental. With the history Catholicism has...it's a good rule to live by.

I don't think I answered your question of Holy Water. FOR ME it is an extension of my Baptism into the Catholic faith. It is a reminder of what I should stand for and what my base belief system is.

All the symbolism and ceremony surrounding my faith does not lead to a magical event or miracle. I don't expect any cures or riches as a result of these things...I will not go so far as to say it does NOT happen for some people. There is far too much unknown in life for me to rule that out...as it is said.. the Lord works in mysterious ways.

I hope I answered all your questions. Thanks for the input...comments such as yours always make me think and, at times, challenge my beliefs.

Actually you are a little wrong on this one Christine. I was raised a Catholic, and I was taught that the host actually becomes the flesh of Christ, and the wine his blood. It was not just symbolic. Oh, did I ever tell you that I was once an alter boy, but I only served one mass because I was late! I still remember some of the Latin prayers.
