Japan took advantage of a mess in north west Asia, with WWI softening up Great Britain in a big way. Rewriting history with speculative conjecture is pointless, but yes, if China, Britain, USA had formed a happy gang, Japan's enthusiastic military expansion might have been stopped sooner and BEFORE the first nuclear war.

By the time Japan got to those southerly points, they had the bit between their teeth and were committed in a big way, probably thinking they would be successful.
