I was born in Stockholm, Sweden and lived there until age 12. Have spent most of my life, most recently 41 years, of my life in Munich, Germany, where I started and run my own business for 35 years until I sold it to a very large Japanese corporation.
Also lived half time in San Diego thus being closer to our main vendors in Silicon Valley. After 12 years there, with Obama coming on stage, with friends and neighbors drifting further to the CA left, my wife, a green card holder from her 7 years in Honolulu working for PanAm, saw her US dream evaporating, so we sold our home and moved out. She is not very liberal, ya know :)

Don't believe the current Scandinavian model, while being quite different from what most US citizens seem to believe, is worth the while to copy. That said, the differences between say Denmark and Sweden are enormous and so is the mentality. I know, because I spent my early youth in Denmark. I went through college and even worked there for a few years until I finally got enough and could move out, when I had 2 job offers, one each from Silicon Valley and from Munich, Germany. That was a close call...

Now about the GOP moving to the left, I don't think so even if you in person sometimes could leave the impression of that. To me it looks more like the rightmost group of the party, whatever you prefer calling them, is losing their influence, while most of the remainder of the party pretty much remains on track with business as usual. The hard core traditional republican positions seem to be on the way out, which I believe is good for the country.

Having done business with Silicon Valley for more than 40 years and having spent much of 12 years in our home in San Diego, I believe I know the US and understand the mentality here quite well. We also had our own company in Ft. Lauderdale for 6 years, where I also spent quite some time. Quite interesting comparing to the West Coast. Europeans generally have no clue about the US and what makes people here tick, I can tell you that for sure.

Right now we spend most of our time in Italy close to Perugia. An interesting country with quite interesting people, actually :)
