MetaCreations Announces Preliminary Fourth-Quarter Results

CARPINTERIA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 6, 1998--MetaCreations Corp. (Nasdaq:MCRE) Tuesday announced that it expects to report earnings per share of $0.01 to $0.04 for the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 1997, compared with $0.07 per share for the fourth quarter of 1996, excluding acquisition costs in that quarter.

MetaCreations also expects to report net revenues of approximately $16 million to $17 million for the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 1997, compared with net revenues of $15.9 million for the fourth quarter of 1996.

MetaCreations noted that net revenues for the fourth quarter, which were lower than expected by industry analysts, were adversely affected by significantly lower OEM and licensing sales than anticipated.

The company also noted that retail demand for its professional 2-D and home photo digital imaging products was not as strong as anticipated, particularly during the last half of the fourth quarter during the holiday buying season. The company's professional 3-D products showed strong growth in the fourth quarter of 1997 over the fourth quarter of 1996.

Overall domestic revenues were up significantly in the fourth quarter of 1997 over the fourth quarter of 1996, while international revenues declined in the fourth quarter of 1997 compared with the fourth quarter of 1996, due substantially to lower international OEM and licensing revenues in the fourth quarter of 1997.

These statements regarding estimated results are preliminary and based on partial information and management assumptions. The company expects to announce its actual results for the year and fourth quarter of 1997 on Jan. 29, 1998.

I cannot believe any serious investor would pay attention to Kai's ramblings. The man may be a genius in some areas, but running a business is not one of them.
