The party has fought it's conservative side for decades. Fighting Reagan, going so far as to run a liberal Republican as a third party candidate .... until he won a landslide. The party hasn't offered America anyone as conservative since.

Reagan came from a background as an almost lifelong democrat. He didn't turn republican until age 51.

Eliminating the conservative side* moves the party to the left all by itself.

You might as well argue, that even the democrats are right now in the process of moving further to the left, with people like Bernie Sanders become more attractive and important by the day.

So the distance between republicans and democrats, between right and left, pretty much remains the same.
