Something like that is the end result of wealth concentration. The fall of Rome is another example. There are so many. All of them are exciting moments in history. Great reading, but a bitch to try to live through.

And then you have The Great Compression. So it can be done peacefully. At least in this country. WWII was not so kind to Europe. But it did result in a breakup of tradition power structures there.

Which is why I find it extremely amusing to see i-node and others insisting that there is no reason to think that wealth concentration has any ill effects. Other than thousands of years of history, that is...
